Cascade Cargo runs a refrigerated fleet across Oregon, Washington, and northern California, with twenty-two active reefers a day through the Cascades and Siskiyou passes. The cell coverage on those corridors is patchy — the GPS stream drops for stretches of fifteen to forty minutes at a time, which had historically masked reefer temperature excursions until the trailer reconnected. The claims team was rejecting about nine percent of all reefers-per-day with a temperature-excursion mark, and the per-claim payout was crossing a budget line they could not ignore on a second consecutive winter.
Approach
Cascade Cargo onboarded FlowSync on its long-haul refrigerated traffic for the start of the winter season. FlowSync’s `gps_delay` detection does not require a constant ping stream — it scores a disruption against the shipment’s estimated transit time, so a missing fifteen-minute window on a reefer already trending above three degrees counts as a real disruption, not a false positive. The combined `gps_delay` + `weather_impact` events triggered instant alerts on eleven reefers across December and January; the reroute recommendations either re-routed around a coverage dead zone or pulled the load forward to the next working reefer yard.
Outcome
Across the twenty-week winter window, temperature-excursion-driven claims on the FlowSync-onboarded fleet dropped from a baseline of 9.4% of reefers-per-day to 5.5% — a 41% reduction. Eleven alerts across the season led to seven accepted reroutes and four overrides, and the override log (each one carrying a reason) is now part of Cascade’s weekly ops review. The team has kept FlowSync on the long-haul reefers for the spring season and is onboarding the regional short-haul fleet ahead of next winter.
